Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU glibc up to 2.44. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the file ld.so of the component Dynamic Loader. The manipulation of the argument ORIGIN with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A stack-based buffer overflow in the dynamic loader (ld.so) of the GNU C Library (glibc) versions 2.14 through 2.44 allows a local attacker to crash or corrupt the memory of setuid/setgid (AT_SECURE) programs. When such a program's DT_RPATH or DT_RUNPATH begins with $ORIGIN and is followed by NUL or '/' the loader both reads past the end of the path buffer and writes past the end of a stack-allocated internal buffer. The corrupted loader stack can lead to a loader crash (denial of service) and limited disclosure of process memory.
The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-95818 since 09/22/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 2.45 eliminates this vulnerability.
