Details
A vulnerability was found in notepad-plus-plus Notepad++ up to 8.9.7. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function NPPM_SAVESESSION handler of the file PowerEditor/src/NppBigSwitch.cpp of the component Session Saving. The manipulation of the argument lParam with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Notepad++ is a free and open-source source code editor. Prior to 8.9.8, the NPPM_SAVESESSION handler in PowerEditor/src/NppBigSwitch.cpp converts lParam to a sessionInfo pointer and dereferences its nbFile, files, and sessionFilePathName members without checking for null. A process running at the same or a higher Windows integrity level on the same desktop can send NPPM_SAVESESSION with a null lParam, immediately terminating Notepad++ and causing denial of service and loss of unsaved documents. This issue is fixed in version 8.9.8.
