Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL PgBouncer up to 1.25.2. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the component SCRAM client-final-message parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Missing validation of a mandatory attribute in the SCRAM client-final-message parser in PgBouncer through 1.25.2 allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to crash the process. A malformed message can make the parser report success while leaving a required value unset, which is then dereferenced as a NULL pointer. The crash occurs before any credential is verified, so no valid account is required. Because PgBouncer serves all clients from a single process, this terminates every pooled connection.
The advisory is available at pgbouncer.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-19888 since 08/14/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
