Apache Tomcat 6.0.0 through 6.0.15 processes parameters in the context of the wrong request when an exception occurs during parameter processing, which might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information, as demonstrated by disconnecting during this processing in order to trigger the exception.
The bug was discovered 02/08/2008. The weakness was shared 02/11/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0002 since 12/03/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6751.
