libvips up to 8.19.0 PFM image vips_avg_scan buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in libvips up to 8.19.0. This issue affects the function vips_avg_scan of the component PFM image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

libvips 8.19.0 contains a memory access vulnerability when processing little-endian PFM images. If the PFM text header length is not a multiple of four bytes, the mmap-based loader can expose pixel data at an address that is not properly aligned for float access. vips_avg_scan() subsequently dereferences the buffer through a float pointer, resulting in undefined behavior and process termination on strict-alignment architectures or UBSan-instrumented builds, leading to denial of service.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-88360 since 09/10/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
