Linux Kernel up to 7.2.3 SMB Client DFS Cache get_tgt_name tgthint null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function get_tgt_name of the component SMB Client DFS Cache. The manipulation of the argument tgthint with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: harden DFS cache against invalid target hints Currently, get_tgt_name() returns ERR_PTR(-ENOENT) when ce->tgthint is NULL, and dfs_cache_noreq_update_tgthint() assumes ce->tgthint is always valid. In preparation for clearing ce->tgthint in free_tgts(), harden callers of get_tgt_name() against ERR_PTR results and harden dfs_cache_noreq_update_tgthint() against NULL pointer dereferences.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-93210 since 09/17/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a48328afbc3f63e3b9de8827e2e16c15b17976f7/6cb7f9fed8f40f28fbd464ca99c946951afc0952/66dbcdbb0cadffd12eb8f2b115fd57d384c5109d/846f0709559b9e27024e126a80bc7afb76516912/7e32da6047d9afdae8dd17b87b4c8d97363c4ee2/bf86c08123c6ab8c61cc0be1dad7540db93738ff is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
