Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 HugeTLB page_alloc_init_late uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function page_alloc_init_late of the component HugeTLB. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/hugetlb: initialize gigantic bootmem hugepage struct pages earlier Gigantic bootmem HugeTLB pages are currently initialized from hugetlb_init(), but page_alloc_init_late() runs earlier and walks pageblocks to determine zone contiguity. If a bootmem HugeTLB region is marked noinit, set_zone_contiguous() can observe still-uninitialized struct pages through __pageblock_pfn_to_page(). This may not trigger an immediate failure, but it can make set_zone_contiguous() compute the wrong zone contiguity state. If extra poisoned-page checks are added in this path, such as PF_POISONED_CHECK() in page_zone_id(), it can also trigger an early boot panic. Initialize gigantic bootmem HugeTLB struct pages from page_alloc_init_late(), before zone contiguity is evaluated, so later page allocator setup only sees valid struct page state. This also makes the initialization order more natural, as struct pages should be initialized before later code inspects them.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-93230 since 09/17/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 09505232eced5f1c42902d8f28740f070c3fc6dc/29968bc7aefb3cf1e72aa7c5f52697a6b0527094/b1b7c045e808c761b1cc8c19b3040fadedda3fef is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
