Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ocfs2_read_inode_block_full of the component ocfs2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: do not use make_bad_inode() in ocfs2_read_inode_block_full() This reverts commit 58b6fcd2ab34 ("ocfs2: mark inode bad upon validation failure during read"). Since 'make_bad_inode()' resets inode type to S_IFREG, doing this for directory inode during active VFS lookup is likely to confuse the latter, including VFS_BUG_ON_INODE() triggered in this case.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-93258 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).
Upgrading to version 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0e7459abff46e28e64367057038ef8607e63f599/d48ace65322001b41bb5322442a21425ef4407d4 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
