Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 iwlwifi iwl_pcie_rx_free use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function iwl_pcie_rx_free of the component iwlwifi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlwifi: pcie: null RX pointers after free When iwl_pcie_tx_init() fails after RX init, nic init unwinds via iwl_pcie_rx_free(). The freed RX members stayed non-NULL on the live transport object, so later teardown or retry could touch stale RX state. Set rx_pool, global_table, rxq, and alloc_page to NULL after free to make repeated cleanup and retry paths safe.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-93796 since 09/18/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6ec5bf430cf7466cb412e47f2761594092781fac/3456c5bcc987aeb182e50e30c9b02be8420e9953/2c79d7a7b583050c9f58041465cb46fe3483ab5d is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
