Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 exfat exfat_create_upcase_table integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. Affected by this issue is the function exfat_create_upcase_table of the component exfat. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: exfat: fix handling of damaged volume in exfat_create_upcase_table() When the size of the upcase table is set to zero in the dentry for any reason(e.g. corrupted media or misbehaving device), an integer overflow causes the module to loop indefinitely. If the size of the upcase table is read zero, do not attempt to load the table. Instead, fallback to loading the default upcase table. If the size of the upcase table is zero or no upcase table is found, raise exfat_fs_error() to mark the volume read-only.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-93828 since 09/18/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 60ace93811609e4dd883e9de5fb4462ed834160a/2cc0b612343638057ef321ce735201a7c2f52f25/20dd3185d13865214ff25b0bf7b931e8d73be1ac is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
