Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 qrtr qrtr_send_resume_tx reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. This affects the function qrtr_send_resume_tx of the component qrtr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: qrtr: fix node refcount leak on ctrl packet alloc failure qrtr_send_resume_tx() calls qrtr_node_lookup() which takes a reference on the returned node. If the subsequent call to qrtr_alloc_ctrl_packet() fails due to memory allocation failure, the function returns -ENOMEM without calling qrtr_node_release() to release the node reference. Add qrtr_node_release(node) before returning on the allocation failure path to properly release the reference.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-97440 since 09/24/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 477353db343663d5502ca442c6de785d2f23f273/9d969c98732a4d42212ec580dd5bbad53f246103/3b09ff54114566864eea59020f6b69c5bb325b9d is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
