Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52 RDMA Counter alloc_and_bind denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function alloc_and_bind of the component RDMA Counter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/counter: Fix num_counters leak on bind_qp failure in alloc_and_bind() When __rdma_counter_bind_qp() fails in alloc_and_bind(), the error path jumps to err_mode which frees the counter without decrementing port_counter->num_counters. The only place that decrements is rdma_counter_free(), which is unreachable since the counter was never successfully bound. This leak accumulates across repeated failures, permanently preventing the port from switching to AUTO mode (-EBUSY in __counter_set_mode()) and blocking the MANUAL→NONE auto-revert in rdma_counter_free(). When the mode was NONE before the call, the MANUAL mode set by __counter_set_mode() also leaks since the revert logic is never reached. Add an err_bind label between the num_counters increment and the existing err_mode label. It decrements num_counters and mirrors the MANUAL→NONE revert from rdma_counter_free(), ensuring the port state is fully restored on bind failure.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-97477 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch da95cb016812c0e012ea839f191926e35ca8f57f/4fbc8230009f5b1bcd13cc74c5a6a43ddba141fd is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
