Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. Affected by this vulnerability is the function set_blocksize of the component omfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: omfs: handle set_blocksize failures omfs uses buffer_heads, which don't handle block size > PAGE_SIZE well. Without this, mounting we will hit the BUG_ON(offset >= folio_size(folio)); in folio_set_bh on the first __bread_gfp call.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-97485 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 61ffc31cd8642d7a950b6831720629c8331365f6/fd4d6593c51253c79be422d6ae42e318250e20a7/18c3d6fcb557f920c9143711497625e70153874c is able to eliminate this problem.
