Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 hpfs set_blocksize buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. Affected by this issue is the function set_blocksize of the component hpfs. Such manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-97486. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function set_blocksize of the component hpfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hpfs: handle set_blocksize failures hpfs uses buffer_heads, which don't handle block size > PAGE_SIZE well. Without this, mounting will hit the BUG_ON(offset >= folio_size(folio)); in folio_set_bh on the first __bread_gfp call.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-97486 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fc79fcc78cb771f2a803e52149cac5ca9050fd05/f27e21cf3c0446a3536ea9b588a78a46b0a2cb66/a405996f23e04942aad064ab8d50c55827482872 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
