Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. Affected is the function __bread_gfp of the component affs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: affs: handle set_blocksize failures affs uses buffer_heads, which don't handle block size > PAGE_SIZE well. Without this, mounting we will hit the BUG_ON(offset >= folio_size(folio)); in folio_set_bh on the first __bread_gfp call.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-97490 since 09/24/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bb45146a661934ef801f8fc62f88cdbcf6584ed1/e01af5aa641039e000af855f448475316f0550fc/0861182af5983a39bd2a891966436c5679b74a45 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
