Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 PCI/sysfs __resource_resize_store privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function __resource_resize_store of the component PCI/sysfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI/sysfs: Add CAP_SYS_ADMIN check to __resource_resize_store() Currently, the __resource_resize_store() allows writing to the resourceN_resize sysfs attribute to change a BAR's size without checking for capabilities, currently relying only on the file access check. Resizing a BAR modifies PCI device configuration and can disrupt active drivers. After the upcoming conversion to static attributes, it will also trigger resource file updates via sysfs_update_groups(). Add a CAP_SYS_ADMIN check to prevent unprivileged users from performing BAR resize operations.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-97505 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b722a607f858b9cd036075ea0efad553fb98e982/cbf0628c0b7db86c5ce36451f088101546acbf1d/25ec7f57deceec633f27bc93b615f951e2ade814 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
