No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in MongoDB Python Driver up to 4.18.1. This affects some unknown processing of the component Key Management Endpoint. The manipulation of the argument key management endpoint value with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The client-side field level encryption support in the MongoDB Python Driver can treat a key management endpoint value ending in ".sock" as a local Unix domain socket path rather than a remote host. A user with write access to the encryption key metadata stored in the database can cause an application using the driver to open connections to local sockets on the application host. Data sent over these connections is limited to the start of a TLS handshake, so no chosen content is transmitted.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-96747 since 09/23/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 4.18.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
