Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2 CIFS cifs_oplock_break denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function cifs_oplock_break of the component CIFS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: avoid leaking refcount when cifs_sb_tlink() fails cifs_oplock_break() takes over the reference that cifs_queue_oplock_break() acquired when it queued the work, and drops it with _cifsFileInfo_put() once the break has been processed. Only in setups with "-o multiuser", cifs_sb_tlink() may fail, at which point cifs_oplock_break() returns without putting the file reference, mirroring the reference leak we already fixed in the companion patch to cifs_queue_oplock_break(). This would trigger a crash due to busy inodes on the next unmount: BUG: Dentry ... still in use (1) [unmount of cifs cifs] VFS: Busy inodes after unmount of cifs (cifs) Drop the reference on that path as well. Doing so before the out label mirrors the normal path, which also puts the reference before cifs_done_oplock_break(). Found by Sashiko code review. The failure path was not exercised at runtime.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-97556 since 09/24/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9ec991e148368e3207e98134c509a625097f7693/dd03fd658ea59821505e0e643b6b7cbdf51c4e1d/1d1b0f1d812a4011a57bc6c70492c34a2e46c6dd/23b26f4408ac3f35a482d2e5cf6fc865d4201b71 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
