CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. The impacted element is the function rockchip_vpu981_av1_dec_set_tile_info of the component AV1 Decoder. Executing a manipulation of the argument elems can lead to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-97577. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. This vulnerability affects the function rockchip_vpu981_av1_dec_set_tile_info of the component AV1 Decoder. The manipulation of the argument elems with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: verisilicon: rockchip: reject AV1 frames exceeding the tile capacity rockchip_vpu981_av1_dec_set_tile_info() indexes the tile group entry array by tile1 * tile_cols + tile0, reading up to tile_cols * tile_rows entries, lays out one descriptor per tile in the AV1_MAX_TILES tile_info buffer, and programs the real tile_cols / tile_rows into the hardware. The tile group entry control is a dynamic array sized to the number of entries userspace submitted, independent of tile_cols / tile_rows, so a frame that claims more tiles than entries reads past the array. A frame that claims more than AV1_MAX_TILES tiles also leaves the hardware programmed for more tiles than the descriptor buffer holds. Reject both in prepare_run(): tile_cols * tile_rows must not exceed the submitted entry count or AV1_MAX_TILES. The entry count is read via v4l2_ctrl_find() (ctrl->elems). This mirrors the bound the mediatek AV1 decoder already enforces.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-97577 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 40029f7f35397853f8711d6fce1d90a4c7a01f8c/a41babf528f70c9a82ed31cfb5fe19065910f7f0/fd965369220cc160bb20a24991790814bfbab401/367db8b23c26a913d76ed70457bbcd781c422b49 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
