Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. This issue affects the function crypto_transfer_hash_request_to_engine of the component s390/crypto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inappropriate encoding for output context vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-838. The product uses or specifies an encoding when generating output to a downstream component, but the specified encoding is not the same as the encoding that is expected by the downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/crypto: Fix handling of EBUSY in PHMAC when req is pushed to crypto engine When a request is transferred to the engine via crypto_transfer_hash_request_to_engine() there are two return codes signaling a successful transfer: EINPROGRESS and EBUSY. However the correct handling of EBUSY was missing and has been added as a return code indicating a successful transfer to the crypto engine.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-97591 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 203702f0013f9b7324e8c5facb6cd6e9c0942b13/bcd7f1f1e2f2882ad206f72425255be105178151/330148371401de474b656eaf521861f12ec1a1ce is able to eliminate this problem.
