Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2 accel/ivpu buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component accel/ivpu. This manipulation causes buffer overflow. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-97915. The attack requires local access. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component accel/ivpu. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: accel/ivpu: Limit firmware log name prints to field size The name in struct vpu_tracing_buffer_header is a fixed-size array populated by the NPU firmware. It is expected to be NUL-terminated, but nothing on the host side enforces this, so printing it with an unbounded string conversion would read past the field if the terminator is ever missing and expose adjacent bytes of the shared tracing BO through dmesg and the debugfs FW log output. Print at most as many characters as the name field holds, so the output never runs past it even if the string is not NUL-terminated.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-97915 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6dbba89df4e842d226f5cd3dbc5e94533cfceea2/5d06257359c9006a208fece9eb7f0a0e83e0cc92/3d7130807009e9be6132c1394a2c7708a3ba39a7/95bf070f3225dc7175725438c916ad321d42fe45 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
