CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ring_buffer_subbuf_order_set of the component ring-buffer. Such manipulation of the argument subbuf_order leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-97617. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function ring_buffer_subbuf_order_set of the component ring-buffer. The manipulation of the argument subbuf_order with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ring-buffer: Check resize_disabled before publishing the new subbuf order ring_buffer_subbuf_order_set() stores the new order and only then walks the CPUs, returning -EBUSY if any of them has resizing disabled. A user mapped buffer has resizing disabled, and __rb_map_vma() reads buffer->subbuf_order without buffer->mutex, so an mmap of an already mapped CPU racing the failing order change sizes the mapping with the new order and inserts pages past the sub-buffer into the VMA. Check the CPUs before storing the new order.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-97617 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f2099644e1b2a2c0805c5240d63ab0522d9d0174/9fd4ea952e6ac12a63c3fe89f08ad02771aa2c06/32bf47db9237c5b8b6f6aaa5356bb4c79d241f76/d860c67c051685abb0460b593b193f0f45f4fa92 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
