Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sample_restore_put of the file net/mlx5e of the component mlx5e. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5e: Fix use-after-free race in sample_restore_put() Concurrent teardown of TC sample rules sharing the same restore context may re-read restore->count after dropping restore_lock. At that point another thread may already have completed cleanup and freed the restore object. Use the result of the refcount decrement while holding restore_lock to determine whether cleanup is needed.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98016 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3efd1a1938cbb33c53b0d75e55b6c0fe2ebad79a/72324da8eeca269db9196c2a555abf72eb0385c5/1daecd76ab9e5f055fe3970462410ad1d40bd177/af3aef0245abbab5e9f6302e7a7d6407187afb71 is able to eliminate this problem.
