Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2 fsl_micfil fsl_sai.c hw_params denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation results in denial of service. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98093. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. Affected is the function hw_params of the file fsl_sai.c of the component fsl_micfil. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: fsl_micfil: balance mclk enable/disable hw_params() enables mclk unconditionally and hw_free() disables it unconditionally, but the PCM core does not guarantee 1:1 pairing: hw_free() can run without hw_params(), and hw_params() can be called multiple times from the SETUP state. This triggers an "already disabled" WARN() in the first case and leaks an enable reference in the second, leaving the clock ungateable. Guard both sides with the existing mclk_flag, as fsl_sai.c does with mclk_streams.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98093 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 470db2026a435b79f7ecb4d65523ea16a99d55d8/fa1bbe3534499dd89d3b0b941d6dd4ddb70c31b5/d3dbccfe6afa7b9a6a7ed65cfaa76a47fa050a56 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
