Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in MoinMoin. This affects an unknown function. Such manipulation of the argument quicklinks leads to path traversal. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2008-0782. Furthermore, an exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MoinMoin (Content Management System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument quicklinks with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in MoinMoin 1.5.8 and earlier allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the MOIN_ID user ID in a cookie for a userform action. NOTE: this issue can be leveraged for PHP code execution via the quicklinks parameter.
The bug was discovered 01/21/2008. The weakness was published 02/14/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-0782 since 02/14/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30055 (MoinMoin MOIN_ID Cookie userform Action Traversal Arbitrary File Overwrite), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
