Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Canonical LXD up to 4.0.13/5.0.9/5.21.7/6.9. This affects an unknown functionality of the component CLI Image Export/Copy. The manipulation of the argument filename with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Path traversal in the CLI client image export and copy functionality in Canonical LXD from 4.0.2 before 4.0.14, 5.0.10, 5.21.8, and 6.10 on all platforms allows a remote malicious or machine-in-the-middle image server to overwrite arbitrary local files and execute code on the client system via a crafted Content-Disposition header filename parameter during unified image export or copy operations into a local directory target.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-86334 since 09/07/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 4.0.14, 5.0.10, 5.21.8 or 6.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
