Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Printf Builtin printf buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Affected is the function printf of the component Printf Builtin. Such manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-102474. The attack must be carried out locally. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function printf of the component Printf Builtin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in dash. The printf builtin reserves four bytes before converting a Unicode \u or \U escape, but the multi-byte token can need five or six bytes. A local user who can supply such an escape to dash printf or echo %b, including through dash -c and a positional argument, can write one or two bytes past that reservation.

The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-102474 since 09/29/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/29/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
