OpenSSL up to 4.0.2 SM2 Signature Generation timing discrepancy

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in OpenSSL up to 3.0.22/3.4.7/3.5.8/3.6.4/4.0.2. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component SM2 Signature Generation. Performing a manipulation results in timing discrepancy. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2026-77696. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSSL up to 3.0.22/3.4.7/3.5.8/3.6.4/4.0.2. This affects an unknown code of the component SM2 Signature Generation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a timing discrepancy vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-208. Two separate operations in a product require different amounts of time to complete, in a way that is observable to an actor and reveals security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Issue summary: SM2 signature generation uses non-constant-time arithmetic on secret values, forming a timing side-channel. Impact summary: An attacker able to measure SM2 signing times may learn information about the per-signature secret nonce, which over many signatures can, via a lattice / Hidden Number Problem attack, lead to recovery of the private key. CWE: CWE-208: Observable Timing Discrepancy Description: SM2 signature generation computes the signature value using variable-time BIGNUM operations on the secret nonce and the private key, so the time taken to produce an SM2 signature depends on these secret values, forming a timing side-channel. Applications performing SM2 signature generation are affected on all platforms. FIPS Impact: no SM2 is not a FIPS algorithm.

The advisory is shared at openssl-library.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-77696 since 08/21/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/29/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 1.1.1zj, 3.0.23, 3.4.8, 3.5.9, 3.6.5 or 4.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
