MISP up to 2.5.47 OTP Authentication Flow authentication replay

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MISP up to 2.5.47. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component OTP Authentication Flow. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication replay vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-294. A capture-replay flaw exists when the design of the product makes it possible for a malicious user to sniff network traffic and bypass authentication by replaying it to the server in question to the same effect as the original message (or with minor changes). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

MISP contains a vulnerability in its one-time password (OTP) authentication flow that allows replay of a consumed HOTP (paper) token and rewinding of the token counter. The HOTP verification logic compared the submitted token against a counter value that was cached in the user's session at the time the password was entered, rather than against the authoritative counter stored in the database. Because the session-cached counter is not updated after a token is successfully consumed, an attacker who holds a valid session (password already submitted) can reuse a previously burned HOTP token. The stale cached counter still matches the replayed token, granting a second successful authentication and effectively rewinding the counter state. Preconditions: - The target user has HOTP (paper token) second-factor authentication enabled. - The attacker possesses a valid session in which the password step has already been completed (the OTP step is pending). - The attacker has access to at least one HOTP token value (e.g., a paper token list). Security impact: - Bypass of the second authentication factor, allowing unauthorized access to a user's MISP account. - Corruption of the HOTP counter state, potentially invalidating subsequent legitimate tokens or enabling further replays. Affected versions: <2.5.48.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-103651 since 10/01/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1040 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 2.5.48 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f34aee2c7 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
