Details
A vulnerability was found in Fortra BoKS Manager and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Checksum Verification. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
boks_ksllogsd accepts a checksum algorithm name in the MD field of an authenticated KSL start message. Affected releases verify that OpenSSL recognizes the digest name but do not verify that the value fits in a fixed 16-byte checksum context field before copying it. An authenticated KSL client can supply an oversized, OpenSSL-recognized digest name and write beyond the end of the heap allocation.
The advisory is shared at fortra.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-79900 since 08/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
