Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in geopy up to 2.4.x. Affected by this issue is the function Point.from_string of the component Parsing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
geopy is a geocoding library for Python. Prior to 2.5.0, geopy.Point and Point.from_string() can spend excessive CPU time due to inefficient regular-expression behavior when an application passes a long malformed coordinate string without the 256-character input limit used by the fix. Geocoder reverse methods also reach the vulnerable parsing path when called with string inputs. Repeated attacker-controlled requests can cause a denial of service, while the numeric Point constructor is unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 2.5.0.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-77387 since 08/20/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 2.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
