A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in phpBB 123 Flash Chat Module (Forum Software) (version now known). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file 123flashchat.php of the component Login. The manipulation of the argument phpbb_root_path with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** Multiple PHP remote file inclusion vulnerabilities in the 123 Flash Chat Module for phpBB allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a URL in the phpbb_root_path parameter to (1) 123flashchat.php and (2) phpbb_login_chat.php. NOTE: CVE disputes this issue because $phpbb_root_path is explicitly set to "./" in both programs.
The weakness was presented 03/05/2008 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-1171 since 03/05/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. By approaching the search of inurl:123flashchat.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
