Microsoft Windows Kernel Mode Driver code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Kernel Mode Driver Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Windows kernel-mode drivers in win32k.sys in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP2, Vista SP1 and SP2, Server 2008 Gold and SP2, Windows 7, and Server 2008 R2 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to "glyph outline information" and TrueType fonts, aka "Win32k TrueType Font Parsing Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 06/08/2010 by Renaud VUPEN with Secunia Research as MS10-032 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1255 since 04/05/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46839 (MS10-032: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (979559)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90605 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS10-032)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-032 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57377), Tenable (46839), SecurityFocus (BID 40570†), OSVDB (65223†) and Secunia (SA39655†).
