A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun JRE 1.4.2 16/5.0 Update 14/6 Update 4 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code of the file javaws.exe. The bug was discovered 03/04/2008. The weakness was disclosed 03/06/2008 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1196 since 03/06/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165677 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Sun Java (SUSE-SA:2008:018)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5622.
