A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun JRE 1.4.2 16/5.0 Update 14/6 Update 4 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code of the file javaws.exe. The bug was discovered 03/04/2008. The weakness was disclosed 03/06/2008 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1196 since 03/06/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32013 (GLSA-200804-20 : Sun JDK/JRE: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165677 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Sun Java (SUSE-SA:2008:018)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5622.
