CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. This issue affects the function mark_block_group_to_copy of the component btrfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: take commit root semaphore when iterating in mark_block_group_to_copy() mark_block_group_to_copy() iterates over the commit root with skip_locking=true. A concurrent transaction commit can swap and free the commit root during iteration, causing use-after-free when accessing extent buffers. Fix it by using path->need_commit_sem to protect the commit root search.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98245 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8e2007b263ea250251ec3021a0a197da990ee1a8/709f6a5e986535005110c6c69b322f63631cb200/c32490c6d3f3a9f2d177d57c7eb8bbc347561d08/0594e3423f4ba3137c734371169491f9a98e9af4 is able to eliminate this problem.
