CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. This impacts the function bcd2000_midi_send of the component rawmidi. The manipulation results in use after free. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98316. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function bcd2000_midi_send of the component rawmidi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: bcd2000: Fix race between rawmidi and disconnect Although we tried to fix the potential UAF issues at USB disconnect on bcd2000 driver, there is still an overlooked case -- namely, when a rawmidi trigger callback has been already running at USB disconnect handling, the in-flight function (e.g. bcd2000_midi_send()) could still access the URB, because the previous URB NULL-check & clearance was considered only for the URB complete callbacks, but not about the parallel rawmidi operations. For addressing the race, this patch introduced a new spinlock that covers each rawmidi operation as well as the rawmidi handling in the complete callback. The URB is cleared with the lock, so it guarantees that the pending rawmidi task already finished or a NULL check is effective.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98316 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8, 7.3-rc1 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3b824930259d54f5047ce6b5c97bd20db2fc2b98/c83d6b0a65f7b71bbabcc91c045dfbffdff6ae76/0a7ecf52cb59ed77ec525deb52c496ea8fba10b1/812ca56867bec3065c2a27f1ff5ce04e2a8bf4f0/9c8b6eff6e7505c128b615d9a1364ef66fa5c18e/221253723dc58bb901c3f27a7659823e63fc598c is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
