Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 SMB Client cifs_query_reparse_point out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function cifs_query_reparse_point of the component SMB Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix reparse buffer bounds in cifs_query_reparse_point() In cifs_query_reparse_point(), the start >= end check before casting to struct reparse_data_buffer * only ensures the start pointer is within the response. It fails to verify that there is enough space remaining for the fixed 8-byte header of the structure. If a server provides a DataOffset that leaves less than 8 bytes remaining, the check passes, but subsequent reads of ReparseTag and ReparseDataLength will occur out-of-bounds. Fix this by ensuring the remaining space is at least the size of the reparse_data_buffer structure before accessing its fields.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98168 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3d67f155fe5813cfb02a551a9a12d6ea06a902e9/d1152c96a3002e3df6b9a5b007cecaa7b19b4f79/8dc5db3a0e583ea8d31d0613cefd99e93e095c3c/5f0306e731e2f46e91419eae57eee3a241c055e0 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
