Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 smb cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The impacted element is the function cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect of the component smb. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-98174. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.157/6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. Affected is the function cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect of the component smb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix rlist race and missing initialization TCP_Server_Info.rlist is allocated via kzalloc which zeros both ->next and ->prev to NULL instead of pointing to itself, making list_empty() always return false and list_add() dereference a NULL ->prev pointer. Also, cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect() can be called concurrently from multiple cifsd threads, allowing the same server's rlist node to be added twice into the local list, corrupting it.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98174 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b5f924ffbfa976e4b97f17e8132c595b97482c2d/5a8f82f9c5839389cf4036029dd75a9911049e83/04082b1833856cb9ed87e0d3d5f04cbf836cf7da/c037d6bde3dd5fa00b017b6b98a5389ec0ebc02f/5f270f091256da1338c3631083e15d7f83cc05e1 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
