Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 sdio_uart sdio_uart_add_port allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function sdio_uart_add_port of the component sdio_uart. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mmc: sdio_uart: fix xmit_fifo leak when the port table is full sdio_uart_add_port() allocates the transmit fifo before claiming a slot in sdio_uart_table[]. When all UART_NR slots are taken, it returns -EBUSY with the fifo still allocated, but the probe error path only kfree()s the port, leaking the transmit fifo. Free the fifo in the failure path of sdio_uart_add_port() itself so the function retains nothing on error.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98208 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9e992d59138fcfaa4bad7cc0750265b0a8bca100/b97b5b66c93cb4aaf6358727a73fff880a774dfd/8a2c1bf209ba04cbd14153a771724bd5aa522fcd/72f4c2b7a48423c708f2c348585419a1b71ab04c/fd8223c53ad9553b2a349d2a40e19bbc6e60fc48/ac866db277a4c73e84b4263773652e3aba326249/5e142adbbdc54afbd01fad476c91cded41d22594/53823e25793a97d07e6e98e0904bbf74cac8bc76 is able to eliminate this problem.
