Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 p54 heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component p54. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: p54: require a full exp_if record in PDR_INTERFACE_LIST The PDR_INTERFACE_LIST loop only checks that the record start is within the entry before reading an entire struct exp_if from it. A truncated trailing record makes the if_id/variant reads cross the entry boundary into the heap beyond the EEPROM buffer (verified with a KASAN reproducer of the loop). The variant also feeds the synth front-end selection, so this is not only a leak. Advance only while a full record still fits in the entry.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98187 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 10/07/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 162dbe1c285a621eab6a9f2851086b63a0378928/70bf34b425fe549a4f6a8d50a319f8f05d1f91c9/487f966421014de41e835bbce3feb30b35f4f729/bc83c04be042f53869c315b8e1eb5f124959d1d7/d44c1badc2dcb042985f7e37f4c448c84548b81f/d2fb6b588dc5bbab4f603661e41cd60f0d931628/d82492fd0a3fb61963c236521852763238ad3898/d8efd84f49379ed28624098821f80e992657d935 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
