Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function cfg80211_calculate_bi_data of the component cfg80211. The manipulation of the argument netdev with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: cfg80211: don't get the radio mask for netdev-less wdevs cfg80211_calculate_bi_data() calls rdev_get_radio_mask() with wdev->netdev, which can be NULL and then crashes in mac80211. To avoid that, invert the order of checks since wdev->netdev is always valid for beaconing interfaces.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98346 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5b313159c970e945ee125ca87fad0d96ed913e55/693d777846d525b8b218bad97a1befa5d9bd4334/7166da84a7fe3553f9065782fd80299a37b150e5/a7783e585360ee05dfe21d3173dbbe985c94f29e is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
