Linux Kernel up to 6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 brcmfmac pmkid stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. The affected element is an unknown function of the component brcmfmac. Such manipulation of the argument pmkid leads to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-98350. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component brcmfmac. The manipulation of the argument pmkid with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: brcmfmac: cyw: pass PMKID to firmware if present Zero out auth_status on initialization. Otherwise, garbage will leak from the stack to the firmware (when ssid is less than 32 bytes and/or when params->pmkid is set). Then, pass the params->pmkid to the firmware (without it, the firmware caches a garbage PMKID on successful authentication and denies a subsequent association request that includes the PMKID).

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98350 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c2cf589c7d546557ed60c43f2ec014279265dfbf/6fba6233e9ca7718661e53555a3961c58772c21a/e2de8d5eb2984416affdd9559e55f37c7f1bbf47 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
