Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 drm setup_out_fence out_fence_ptr memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. Affected is the function setup_out_fence of the component drm. The manipulation of the argument out_fence_ptr with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm: Fix drm_pending_vblank_event leak in error path for out_fence_ptr When an out_fence_ptr is provided but DRM_MODE_PAGE_FLIP_EVENT is not set, a drm_pending_vblank_event will be allocated. If later, there is an allocation failure or another failure at setup_out_fence(), that event will not have base.fence set and it will not be released at complete_signaling(). Release the event and set crtc_state->event to NULL just like in the DRM_MODE_PAGE_FLIP_EVENT case when there is a failure at drm_event_reserve_init(). That is, prepare_signaling() releases the event and there is nothing to be done at complete_signaling(). Use drm_event_cancel_free() as that will also undo drm_event_reserve_init() in case it has been called.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98319 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3d6576ed3de01e8a378397b7020e33ae3d40aa6c/86c33f740aa27e9cdc1259f0cc59c9c58f545e4b/88c450e23b8fd4f1dcd329562f5e81ef05f3d941/780716e2e019186fa6e5aad097a44b87b0b5388f/d0be0516b5224eb5b6f42f8564a8deadb20ae16b/daefd7ff159b0d1fb8c9e64430dcbe2aca1bdd09/b9a68a9ccaada15d8dd0102c188cc6b868ff800b/9eb1a393c89a79c4210230d23e7d88d239c61d7b is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
