Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 cfg80211 cfg80211_update_assoc_bss_entry comparison

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function cfg80211_update_assoc_bss_entry of the component cfg80211. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a comparison vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-697. The product compares two entities in a security-relevant context, but the comparison is incorrect, which may lead to resultant weaknesses. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: cfg80211: don't filter by BSS type when removing stale entries When an assoc AP switches to a channel that already has a BSS entry, cfg80211_update_assoc_bss_entry() removes that entry before rehashing the real one, since the two would otherwise collide in the BSS rbtree. The lookup for that entry also required it to match the connection's BSS type, so an entry advertising e.g. the IBSS capability bit was left in place, and the following cfg80211_rehash_bss() then ran into it: WARN_ON(!cmp) Changing the type shouldn't really happen, but can be triggered by a rogue AP/device, so drop the check and remove any entries matching the comparison.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98339 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6ef87a853327434ae1cd9c5a2c27a557fb4047fc/1380ee3a202dbb9f8e8b3c3b87eb410450d57799/fb445ec7480da5d2b82bf681e3b4313603722729/65fdb973bd905bc3f5cb045a04c1828f2d2a7e24/64e23a36d8f04811372365b44cfca325f8e0f4bb/6d2fd26185678038ef2ea11dd4d2e6eccbf2dd25/0aa44982125c86b47961be5ac1c82eddab8080f3/b377e1000d963e7182a987082b4b06580bd7ac84 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
