Details
A vulnerability was found in Django Software Foundation Django up to 5.2.17/6.0.8/6.1.1. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function django.utils.http.parse_header_parameters of the file django/utils/http.py of the component Header Parsing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in Django 6.1 before 6.1.2, 6.0 before 6.0.9, and 5.2 before 5.2.18. `django.utils.http.parse_header_parameters()` was subject to a potential denial-of-service attack due to quadratic time complexity when parsing a value with many separators inside a quoted parameter. An unauthenticated request could reach this parsing through headers such as `Accept` or `Content-Type`, for instance via the content negotiation performed by `HttpRequest.accepts()`. The per-call length limit does not bound the combined size of repeated headers. Earlier, unsupported Django series (such as 5.1.x, 5.0.x, and 4.2.x) were not evaluated and may also be affected. Django would like to thank Jisung Chae for reporting this issue.
The advisory is shared at docs.djangoproject.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-84429 since 09/01/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 5.2.18, 6.0.9 or 6.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
