Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in GIMP. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component DDS Loader. This manipulation causes out-of-bounds write. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-106062. The attack can only be executed locally. There is no exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in GIMP (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component DDS Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A heap-based buffer overflow was found in GIMP’s DirectDraw Surface (DDS) loader. When loading a crafted DDS image, buffer sizes derived from width, height, and pitch can be computed using 32-bit arithmetic that overflows. The allocated buffer is too small for the amount of pixel data written through GEGL (CWE-787), following integer overflow in size calculations (CWE-190). This may allow heap corruption and, in the worst case, arbitrary code execution in the context of the GIMP process.
It is possible to read the advisory at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-106062 since 10/06/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
