WSO2 Identity Server up to 5.10.x SMS OTP access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in WSO2 Identity Server up to 5.10.x. This affects some unknown processing of the component SMS OTP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The WSO2 Identity Server fails to enforce a default expiry time for SMS One-Time Passwords (OTPs) used in multi-factor authentication (MFA). This allows unused OTPs to remain valid indefinitely, presenting an opportunity for malicious actors to conduct brute force attacks by repeatedly guessing the OTP. The absence of automatic expiration for OTPs grants attackers an unlimited timeframe to attempt guessing the correct code. A successful brute force attack can lead to an MFA bypass, resulting in the unauthorized takeover of a user's account and compromising the security and privacy of both the individual and the system.

The advisory is shared at security.docs.wso2.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-8122 since 08/23/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 5.11.0, 5.11.0.372, 6.0.0.227 or 6.1.0.219 eliminates this vulnerability.
