A vulnerability has been found in Unreal Engine 1/2/2.5 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function UGameEngine::UpdateConnectingMessage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the UGameEngine::UpdateConnectingMessage function in the Unreal engine 1, 2, and 2.5, as used in multiple games including Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal tournament 2003, Postal 2, Raven Shield, and SWAT4, when downloads are enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long LEVEL field in a WELCOME response to a download request.
The weakness was presented 07/07/2010 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is shared at aluigi.altervista.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2702 since 07/12/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
