Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OFFIS DCMTK 3.7.0. Affected by this issue is the function XMLNode::ParseXMLElement/XMLNode::emptyTheNode of the file ofstd/libsrc/ofxml.cc of the component XML Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a recursion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-674. The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Uncontrolled recursion in XMLNode::ParseXMLElement() and XMLNode::emptyTheNode() in the bundled XML parser (ofstd/libsrc/ofxml.cc) of OFFIS DCMTK 3.7.0 allows an attacker to cause a denial of service (stack exhaustion and process crash) via a crafted XML document with deeply nested elements. The parser is reachable through dcmencap when encapsulating a CDA document, and through any application that calls OFXMLParser::parseFile() or OFXMLParser::parseString() on untrusted input. The issue is fixed in commit d12e350e687530eb41e2b0c860aff4d8c04e5941.
The advisory is shared for download at support.dcmtk.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-44033 since 05/05/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Applying the patch d12e350e687530eb41e2b0c860aff4d8c04e5941 is able to eliminate this problem.
