Apache CXF up to 3.6.12/4.1.8/4.2.3 Max Age Authentication-Freshness Check OidcClientCodeRequestFilter incorrect operator

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apache CXF up to 3.6.12/4.1.8/4.2.3. Affected by this issue is the function OidcClientCodeRequestFilter of the component Max Age Authentication-Freshness Check. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incorrect operator vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-480. The product accidentally uses the wrong operator, which changes the logic in security-relevant ways. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The max_age authentication-freshness check in OidcClientCodeRequestFilter was inoperative due to a milliseconds/seconds unit mismatch and an inverted comparison polarity. Any relying party using setMaxAgeOffset to enforce re-authentication would silently accept sessions of any age, bypassing step-up authentication policies. Users are recommended to upgrade to versions 4.2.4 or 4.1.9 or 3.6.13, which fix this issue.

The advisory is available at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-71575 since 08/07/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/09/2026).

Upgrading to version 3.6.13, 4.1.9 or 4.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
